Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has responded boldly to a controversial social media post targeting his association with the Igbo community, declaring that he shares Igbo heritage and proudly embraces it.
The drama began on Tuesday after a user, @Yakbel, took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue a warning to the singer, accusing him of getting too close to the Igbo people. The post claimed that Igbos would eventually betray him, stating:
“Davido just dey carry Ibo full body, until when dem betray am before e rest. Yoruba boy dey frolick with Ibos in 2025, they want your head and everything you have to belong to them. You can never satisfy Ibos ooo. IBOs are not people you surround yourself with as a Yoruba man.”
The tribal tone of the post drew swift condemnation across social media. In a direct and powerful response, Davido replied simply: “Lol, I AM IGBO by blood.”
The award-winning artist’s statement has since gone viral, drawing widespread praise from fans and fellow celebrities who applauded him for rejecting ethnic division and promoting national unity.
Many described his response as mature, timely, and representative of the spirit of modern Nigeria—where music and culture transcend tribal lines.
The controversy follows Davido’s recent public show of respect to legendary Igbo highlife musician, Elder Bright Chimezie, whom he hosted on Monday.
The visit came days after Davido credited Chimezie for inspiring one of his verses on the hit track With You. The move was celebrated by fans as a gesture of cultural appreciation and cross-generational unity.
Davido’s declaration that he is “Igbo by blood” has further cemented his position not only as a global music icon but also as a symbol of Nigeria’s cultural diversity and inclusiveness.
As tensions occasionally flare across the country along ethnic lines, his message has been received as a strong statement against tribalism in both entertainment and public discourse.
