The Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has expressed outrage and demanded justice following a horrifying act of domestic violence and child abuse in the Onicha Ngwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
The tragic incident, which occurred between 1am and 2am on Saturday, involved a 40-year-old man, Mr. Udochi Amala, allegedly setting himself, his wife, Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three children ablaze over suspicions of infidelity.
According to reports, Mr. Amala, a resident of Amapu Ihe village in Osisioma LGA, allegedly carried out the attack after a dispute with his wife, whom he suspected of cheating—though he later admitted he had no evidence. In a chilling statement, he reportedly told investigators, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.”
After setting the house on fire, Udochi attempted to escape but was apprehended by locals. One of his daughters died shortly after the incident due to the severity of her burns. Unconfirmed reports emerging late Monday suggested that Mrs. Amala and her two remaining children also succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital.
The Abia State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed awareness of the incident and assured that investigations were ongoing.
Reacting to the gruesome development, FIDA Abia released a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, signed by its Chairperson, Njideka Aniawonwa, and Secretary, Eberechukwu Kanu Oji. The statement condemned the act as “a gross violation of human rights and dignity,” expressing shock and deep concern.
“We call for a thorough and expedited investigation into this case,” the statement read. “This horrific act must not go unpunished. The survivors and the deceased deserve justice, and the perpetrator must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
FIDA Abia also called on the public to be vigilant and report any signs of domestic violence and abuse, adding that the organisation remains committed to defending the rights of women and children across the state.
As the community mourns the tragic loss, many are calling for intensified efforts to tackle the growing cases of domestic abuse and child endangerment in Nigerian homes, particularly through improved mental health support, community education, and stricter enforcement of protective laws.
