In a candid interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, Mohammed El-Rufai the eldest son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and a lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency expressed his support for the Kaduna State Government’s investigation into his father’s administration.
However, he stressed that the probe must be conducted with clear, unbiased intent and focus solely on uncovering facts rather than settling personal scores.
"Accountability is crucial for progress," Mohammed stated, emphasizing that investigations must not devolve into tools for political vendettas.
"If done for selfish reasons, such inquiries only harm progress," he added, underscoring his concern that any misuse of the probe could undermine the democratic process.
The lawmaker made it clear that his support for the investigation did not extend to mediating the apparent rift between his father and the incumbent Governor Uba Sani.
He dismissed media exaggerations of the conflict between the former and current administrations, asserting that reconciling the differences between them is not his responsibility.
"My priority is serving my constituents with effective governance, not playing mediator in an issue that has been blown out of proportion," he said.
Reflecting on his personal sentiments regarding the ongoing tension, Mohammed revealed his discontent with what he described as a "cold war" between his father and Governor Uba Sani a conflict that, according to him, is being sensationalized by some quarters.
In a remark laced with humor, he compared the situation to the legendary Bollywood feud between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, suggesting that while the public may find such conflicts entertaining, they are detrimental to progress when used for political leverage.
Mohammed El-Rufai’s comments come at a time when calls for transparency and accountability in public office are increasingly resonating across Nigeria.
His appeal for an impartial investigation highlights the delicate balance between political accountability and the risk of investigations becoming politically motivated tools.
As discussions continue on the best path forward, his stance serves as a reminder that the pursuit of truth and effective governance should always transcend personal or political rivalries.
