The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to withdraw the controversial Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly, urging a more inclusive process that engages key stakeholders nationwide.
In its New Year message to Nigerians on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed the need for the government to prioritise citizen welfare in 2025 amidst the rising cost of living.
Ajaero described the bills as divisive, particularly in northern regions, where they have been criticised for impeding economic growth. He emphasised that a robust national tax policy must be built collaboratively to ensure transparency, fairness, and wider acceptance.
In a statement titled "In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve," the NLC urged the government to focus on policies that improve access to essential services, including food, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, and security.
The union highlighted the importance of addressing worker welfare, noting that these measures are crucial for effective governance. The NLC reminded Nigerians of their collective strength, urging them to rise above the challenges of economic hardship and underdevelopment. It called for a united effort to propel the nation forward, asserting that true progress would only be achieved through the resolve of its people.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for workers by pushing for an upward wage review to address the economic realities confronting them.
Ajaero emphasised the need for strict compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act, assuring workers that the union would engage the government to ensure fair and timely wage adjustments.
He also warned against the growing use of force in interactions with unions, describing such practices as detrimental to industrial harmony.
Ajaero reiterated the union’s call for meaningful social dialogue and adherence to agreements with trade unions to maintain peace in the labour sector.
Looking ahead, the NLC announced its plans to host a national dialogue in Ibadan this January to facilitate discussions on a new tax framework that supports national development.
The union expressed optimism about working collaboratively with social partners to develop a tax policy that is inclusive and widely accepted.
Ajaero urged the federal government to withdraw the current tax reform bills from the National Assembly to create space for an inclusive process that addresses the nation’s economic challenges.
The union also highlighted the need for the government to respect agreements with trade unions and prioritise policies that improve the quality of life for citizens.
The NLC stressed that addressing economic challenges and fostering industrial harmony would pave the way for sustainable national development.
As 2025 begins, Ajaero called on Nigerians to remain united and determined to overcome the country’s difficulties, stating that only collective action can lead to meaningful progress.
The NLC reaffirmed its dedication to representing workers' interests and urged the government to focus on policies that promote inclusive growth and improved welfare for all citizens.
