The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured residents of Abuja that his administration's reforms will persist in 2025, with a renewed focus on development and economic growth.
In his New Year message on Wednesday, Wike reflected on the significant achievements of 2024 and promised to sustain the momentum to improve the living standards of FCT residents.
Addressing the residents, Wike stated, "Dear Residents of the FCT, Happy New Year! As we enter 2025 with renewed hope and optimism, I extend my warmest wishes to you all and pray that this new year brings peace, progress, and prosperity to every household within the FCT.
"I also wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for cooperating with the administration in implementing its policies and programs. Your support and understanding have driven our vision for a better FCT."
He acknowledged the challenges of 2024 but described the year as a "remarkable period" for the FCT, marked by transformative achievements in infrastructure, education, and security.
Wike highlighted these accomplishments as laying the groundwork for sustained development and called them a testament to the collective commitment to building a progressive and unified FCT.
The minister detailed several infrastructure projects completed in 2024, including the construction of urban and rural roads that have improved connectivity and accessibility for residents.
He noted that these developments have significantly boosted economic activities in rural communities, creating job opportunities and enhancing livelihoods.
In the area of education, Wike reported the renovation of numerous schools, creating a more conducive learning environment for students and investing in the future generation's quality education. He stated, “Our administration is committed to empowering the youth through education, as they represent the future of this territory and our country.”
On security, the minister outlined bold measures implemented in 2024, including the provision of over 100 vehicles to various security agencies and the adoption of innovative strategies to combat crime.
These efforts, he said, have yielded tangible results, with residents enjoying increased safety and confidence in the security of their communities.
However, Wike's tenure has not been without controversy. His administration has faced criticism for demolishing some communities and reallocating lands within the FCT, actions that have sparked debates over their long-term impact on affected residents.
Addressing these concerns indirectly, Wike called for continued cooperation and understanding from the public, stressing that his policies aim to create a better and more inclusive FCT for all.
As the new year begins, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to working tirelessly for the development of the FCT. He called on residents to maintain their spirit of peaceful coexistence and unity, which he described as crucial for the territory's progress.
"We will continue to push forward reforms that ensure no one is left behind. Together, we can build an FCT that serves as a model for other parts of Nigeria a city of growth, security, and opportunity for all," Wike concluded.
The minister’s New Year message signals an administration intent on deepening its reforms and addressing the needs of the FCT population in 2025, while navigating the challenges of balancing progress with inclusivity.
