Obasanjo Thanks Gowon for Secret Plea to Abacha, "I Never Knew You Wrote for My Release"

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed gratitude to retired General Yakubu Gowon for a revelation about efforts to save his life during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha.
Gowon disclosed that he personally pleaded with Abacha to spare Obasanjo’s life, following accusations of a coup plot that led to Obasanjo’s imprisonment.

Speaking at the Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival held over the weekend, Gowon recounted his behind-the-scenes intervention.

He expressed joy that Obasanjo not only survived three years of imprisonment but went on to lead Nigeria as president in 1999, following Abacha’s death in 1998.

In response, Obasanjo acknowledged the efforts of many individuals who worked for his release but admitted he was unaware of Gowon’s direct involvement.

"When I came out of prison, I thanked friends who prayed and appealed for my release, both inside and outside the country. But I never knew you wrote a personal letter until you revealed it yesterday. I thank you for that," Obasanjo said.

The event, hosted at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar in Jos South, Plateau State, drew notable figures, including Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang and former governors Jonah Jang, Joshua Dariye, and Boni Haruna.

This heartfelt exchange between two of Nigeria’s prominent leaders sheds light on the intricate political and personal relationships that shaped the nation’s history during its most challenging periods.
