In a recent ruling at the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, a 30-year-old man named Garba Aliyu was sentenced to three weeks of community service, which involves sweeping the court premises, for stealing a woman's purse.
Aliyu pleaded guilty to the theft, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, emphasized that Aliyu's plea spared the court from a prolonged prosecution and noted that the punishment would have been more severe if he had not admitted to the crime.
Additionally, the court took into account the fact that Aliyu was a first-time offender who showed remorse.
The Magistrate advised Aliyu to exhibit good behavior, highlighting the court's disapproval of violent acts.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, explained that Aliyu trespassed into a shop and stole a purse belonging to Adanna Ebuka while pretending to buy a loaf of bread.
The stolen purse was later recovered from Aliyu during police investigation. Leo stated that Aliyu's actions contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
