Peter Obi Returns from Vatican, Calls for Unity Beyond Politics and Religion

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has returned to Nigeria after a quiet and reflective visit to the Vatican, where he attended a recent inauguration ceremony hosted by the Holy See.

In a statement released on Monday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi emphasized the spiritual nature of his trip and urged the public not to politicize his participation.

Describing the visit as “deeply solemn and reflective,” Obi clarified that his attendance was in line with his long-standing interest in witnessing significant global events and official ceremonies.

“My participation in the inauguration ceremony was in line with my previous witnessing of inaugurations, swearing-ins, and official ceremonies across the world — this was no exception,” he stated.

Obi firmly distanced himself from any political interpretations of the visit, stressing that such occasions should be appreciated for their moral and spiritual essence.

“This was never a political event and should remain untouched by politics. Some moments are best reserved for quiet contemplation,” he wrote.

The former Anambra State governor also addressed speculation about a possible meeting with the Pope, clarifying that he did not attend the Papal Audience, which was limited to heads of state and accredited diplomats. “I did not meet the Pope personally,” he confirmed.

What Obi found most striking during his Vatican experience, however, was the content of Pope Francis’ homily. Quoting its core message, he highlighted the Pope’s passionate appeal for global solidarity, particularly in fighting poverty and promoting unity beyond the usual boundaries of ethnicity, politics, and religion.

“What should truly command our attention is the content and moral force contained in the Pope’s homily,” Obi stated. “The call to confront poverty and to build a world anchored in brotherhood and compassion is a challenge to all of us — leaders and citizens alike.”

Obi’s remarks have been received warmly by many of his supporters and observers who view his global engagements as a continuation of his commitment to moral leadership and human development. His visit to the Vatican comes amid continued national conversations around governance, unity, and Nigeria’s role on the world stage.

Though no longer on the ballot, Peter Obi continues to shape discourse in the country, urging Nigerians to look beyond divisions and focus on values that uplift the nation.
