Okehi Chairman Declares Indefinite Curfew Amid Political Tensions Over Senator Natasha’s Homecoming

The Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Amoka Monday, has imposed an indefinite curfew across the council area, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.

The decision follows rising political activities in the state, particularly in response to the planned homecoming of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.

In an official statement, the council chairman stressed that the curfew aligns with directives from the Kogi State government and the Commissioner of Police.

He stated that the measure aims to prevent unauthorised political rallies and unregulated gatherings that could potentially threaten the peace and stability of the region.

He further warned that anyone found loitering or assembling in restricted zones without prior clearance from the relevant authorities would be arrested and prosecuted.

Monday reiterated that his administration prioritises the security and stability of residents, adding that any action capable of inciting unrest will not be tolerated.

According to him, the safety of the people is paramount, and no situation that could jeopardise the peace and stability of the communities will be allowed.

The curfew comes amid heightened political tensions in Kogi State, where Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has remained one of the most outspoken opposition figures.

Apart from her ongoing sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Natasha has been vocal about electoral transparency and economic development, often clashing with the state government.

Her planned visit to her home district in Okene sparked concerns among authorities, who feared possible clashes between supporters and opponents. As a result, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, acting under the directives of Governor Usman Ododo’s administration, officially banned her homecoming rally.

The decision has sparked outrage among Senator Natasha’s supporters, who believe the move is politically motivated and an attempt to silence opposition voices ahead of upcoming elections.

However, the Kogi State Police Command defended the decision, stating that intelligence reports suggested hoodlums planned to hijack the event and cause unrest.

The police further stated that no activity that could disrupt the prevailing peace in the state would be allowed.

The Kogi State Government has also backed the ban, arguing that it is a preventive measure to ensure law and order. Meanwhile, the curfew has triggered mixed reactions among Kogi residents.

While some support the government’s security measures, others view it as a deliberate suppression of opposition activities.

Civil society organisations and community leaders have urged the government to implement security measures fairly, ensuring they do not violate citizens’ fundamental rights.

Supporters of Senator Natasha have called for an immediate reversal of the curfew, describing it as an intimidation tactic aimed at weakening opposition forces in the state.

The unfolding situation in Okehi and Kogi State remains tense, with observers closely monitoring how both the government and opposition figures navigate this latest political standoff.
