The House of Representatives has ordered a nationwide shutdown of pornographic websites, directing the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce the immediate ban across all internet service providers.
During plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion, citing the need to "protect societal values" from the harmful effects of cyber pornography. The motion was sponsored by Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, who represents the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency.
Tafoki argued that pornography was a growing global issue with severe psychological and sociological consequences, emphasizing that Nigeria, being a religious country, should take a firm stance against it.
"Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings about the dangers of pornography. Its effects include promoting adultery, prostitution, and promiscuous behaviors, leading to addiction, desensitization, and changes in attitude towards family and society," he stated.
He further noted that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have already implemented similar bans.
Following the motion's adoption, the House mandated its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee its implementation and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, reinforced the directive, warning that internet service providers failing to comply would face sanctions.
With this decision, Nigeria joins a growing list of nations seeking to regulate online content deemed harmful to moral and societal values.
