The Nasarawa State Police Command arrested Ajayi on January 12 and brought him before Justice Simeon Aboki at Court 2 in Lafia on Monday. The charge against him, culpable homicide punishable by death, has sparked widespread attention.

During the arraignment, Stanley Nwaforagu, Officer-in-Charge, Legal, of the Nasarawa State Police Command, emphasized the gravity of the case. Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Nwaforagu said:

“Today, the 27th day of January 2025, the defendant, Mr. Timileyin Ajayi, was properly arraigned before this Honourable Court on the one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable with death. His plea was taken, and he pleaded not guilty to the charge. A date has been set for trial, with proceedings scheduled from March 17 to March 20.”

Nwaforagu expressed confidence in the prosecution’s case, citing overwhelming evidence and promising that the police would remain steadfast in their pursuit of justice for Adaidu.

The defendant’s counsel, Joseph Tukur, also addressed the media, clarifying his role in the legal process.

“My client has entered his plea as required by law. The prosecution bears the burden of proving the case beyond reasonable doubt, and my job is to ensure they fulfill this obligation within the legal framework,” Tukur stated.

When asked about his strategy given earlier comments made by Ajayi, Tukur reiterated his commitment to ensuring the law is upheld.

The court’s decision to expedite the trial has been welcomed by both parties. The case has captivated public attention, with many eager to see justice served for the late Salome Adaidu, whose untimely death has left her family and friends heartbroken.

As the trial approaches, the spotlight remains on Lafia, where the legal battle is set to unfold.
