Former President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken candidly about his improved health since stepping down from office on May 29, 2023.
Reflecting on his time as Nigeria’s leader, Buhari revealed that his well-being has significantly improved, adding that he now looks healthier than he did during his tenure as President.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting held at the Katsina State Government House, Buhari hinted that the complexities and demands of leading a nation as diverse as Nigeria had taken a toll on his health.
“Those outside the corridors of power do not understand the complexities and difficulties facing Nigeria,” Buhari stated. “My health has improved since leaving office. People who visited me told me I look better than before.”
During his time in office, Buhari faced several health challenges that required him to seek medical attention abroad on multiple occasions.
His extended medical trips drew both concern and criticism from Nigerians, with many speculating on the toll his role as President had on his health.
After serving two terms as Nigeria’s President, Buhari handed over the reins of power to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his successor and fellow party member, in May 2023.
Since then, Buhari has maintained a relatively low profile, spending much of his time in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The former President’s remarks underscore the intense pressures that come with leading Africa’s most populous nation, a role often fraught with political, economic, and security challenges.
Buhari’s acknowledgment of improved health after stepping away from the presidency also sheds light on the personal sacrifices made by those in high office.
As Buhari continues to enjoy his retirement, many Nigerians remain reflective of his tenure, with his health journey serving as a reminder of the human side of leadership amidst the complexities of governance.
