In a shocking incident, bandits have attacked a General Hospital in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, abducting several victims and demanding a ransom of N540 million for their release.
The attack, which took place on Tuesday, left a medical doctor, Dr. Murtala Sale Dandashire, and another individual with gunshot injuries.
Dr. Dandashire was injured during the raid, which also saw several staff members of the hospital, including Yusuf Muhammad Mairuwa, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, being kidnapped.
Reports indicate that the attackers have demanded N270 million for the release of Mairuwa and an additional N270 million for the other abducted victims, including workers from a nearby fertilizer factory.
The incident has reignited concerns about the security of healthcare facilities in the region. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda condemned the attack, describing it as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring safety despite some progress in reducing banditry.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, the Governor assured the public of his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives, particularly those of healthcare workers.
The Governor emphasized the need for a more robust security strategy, stating that his administration would implement additional measures to protect healthcare facilities.
He pledged to ensure that medical professionals can carry out their duties without fear, highlighting that the safety of residents and healthcare workers remains a top priority.
The attack has left the local community in shock, with many calling for immediate and decisive action to secure the release of the abducted individuals and prevent future occurrences.
As the government intensifies efforts to tackle insecurity, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by banditry in Katsina State.
