In a heartbreaking turn of events, Christmas Day celebrations in Yaav and Mbakyol council wards of Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State, were marred by bloodshed.
Suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack on the communities, leaving over 12 people dead and abducting seven children.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as brutal and devastating, throwing the once festive atmosphere into chaos and mourning.
Residents fled their homes, seeking refuge as the attackers wreaked havoc on the villages.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Benue State, SP Catherine Anene, revealed she had not yet received official reports from the area.
"I haven't received a report of any incident in that place. I even called, and I am waiting for them to tell me what actually happened there.
That area is the boundary between Benue and Cameroon. It is a kind of forest and hilly area, sometimes they have network challenges.
Hopefully, by this evening, I think they will try to reach me," SP Anene explained.
The affected area, situated along the border between Nigeria and Cameroon, is known for its rugged terrain and poor network connectivity, complicating communication and emergency response.
As families grapple with the loss of loved ones and the uncertainty surrounding the abducted children, the tragedy highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region.
Authorities are urged to expedite rescue efforts and address the persistent threats posed by banditry in rural communities.
The Benue State Police Command has promised to provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, the community mourns the victims of this Christmas Day horror.
