Buhari Mourns Victims of Tragic Stampedes Across Nigeria, Sends Festive Greetings

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over a series of devastating stampedes that claimed numerous lives in Oyo State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Anambra State.
In a statement released on Sunday by his media spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari conveyed his heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the affected families, and communities mourning the tragic losses.

The statement, titled "Buhari Condoles Loss of Lives in Stampedes, Extends Christmas/New Year Greetings," also highlighted his solidarity with the Catholic community, which was deeply affected by the events.

The tragic incidents unfolded during separate public gatherings, leaving heartbreak and sorrow in their wake.

In the FCT, a food distribution event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, resulted in the death of ten individuals, including four children.

In Oyo State, a children’s funfair at the Islamic High School in Ibadan turned fatal, with 35 lives lost and many others injured.

Similarly, in Anambra State, a stampede at the gate of the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, left many feared dead and others nursing injuries.

Buhari extended his sympathies to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, urging them to offer prayers and support to the bereaved families and those injured in the incidents.

He also expressed his condolences to the Catholic community, recognizing the profound grief caused by the losses.

In his statement, the former President offered warm Christmas and New Year wishes to Nigerians, encouraging citizens to reflect on the noble teachings of Jesus Christ.

He emphasized the importance of unity, compassion, and peace as the nation prepares to celebrate the festive season. “May the New Year, 2025, bring us all prosperity, peace, and good health,” Buhari stated, extending his blessings to the entire nation.

The stampedes, which have overshadowed the holiday season, have prompted discussions about safety and crowd control at public events.

Authorities in the affected areas have promised thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences. As the nation grieves, Buhari’s message serves as both a condolence and a call for resilience, compassion, and unity in the face of tragedy.
