The Relentless Persecution of Yahaya Bello: A Perspective by Jesutega Onokpasa

Legal expert and public commentator Jesutega Onokpasa has raised concerns over what he describes as the “unrelenting campaign” of persecution against Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

In a recent statement, Onokpasa argued that the ongoing legal battles and media scrutiny targeting the governor are politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his legacy.

Governor Bello has faced a series of allegations, including the recent N110 billion fraud case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The case, which has garnered widespread attention, accuses the governor of diverting public funds through fraudulent means.

However, Onokpasa insists that these allegations lack substance and are part of a broader scheme to discredit Bello.

“What we are witnessing is not justice in pursuit of truth but a deliberate attempt to smear a man who has dared to challenge the status quo,” he said.

Onokpasa highlighted Bello’s achievements in office, including advancements in infrastructure, security, and youth empowerment in Kogi State.

He expressed concern that the allegations could overshadow these accomplishments, painting an incomplete picture of the governor's tenure.

“Governor Bello’s commitment to uplifting Kogi State has been evident in his policies. This persecution seeks to erode the goodwill he has built among the people,” Onokpasa noted.

The legal expert also criticized what he termed “trial by media,” where public opinion is shaped by sensational headlines rather than facts. He called for due process and objectivity in handling the allegations against Bello.

“Nigeria’s democracy thrives on fairness and justice. We must resist the temptation to turn our legal institutions into tools for political vendettas,” he emphasized.

As the legal proceedings against Yahaya Bello continue, Onokpasa’s comments have reignited debates about the politicization of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.

While some argue that no leader should be above the law, others believe that political figures like Bello deserve a fair chance to defend their legacy.

The unfolding saga underscores the complexities of governance and accountability in Nigeria, with public attention now focused on how the courts will handle this high-stakes case.
