From “Emilokan” to “Sheyi-Lokan”: Political Entitlement or Dynastic Ambition? – Isaac Asabor

Renowned political analyst Isaac Asabor has sparked intense debate with his thought-provoking critique of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

In his latest piece, Asabor delves into the shift from the much-discussed mantra “Emilokan” (It’s my turn) to the emerging phenomenon of “Sheyi-Lokan” (Sheyi’s turn), which he argues symbolizes a growing trend of political entitlement extending to family dynasties.

Asabor reflects on the now-iconic “Emilokan” phrase used by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his 2023 presidential campaign, which he used to assert his readiness to lead.

However, the analyst raises concerns over what he describes as an apparent transition of this entitlement mindset to younger generations, specifically within political families.

He cites growing speculation around Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, being positioned for political prominence as a case study of dynastic ambition.

“While Emilokan resonated as a personal claim to leadership, Sheyi-Lokan suggests an inherited entitlement.

This shift signals the institutionalization of dynasties in Nigerian politics, which could alienate the electorate,” Asabor writes.

Asabor warns that such political entrenchment could undermine meritocracy and discourage younger, unaffiliated leaders from entering the political arena.

He stresses that democracy thrives on competition and diversity, both of which are at risk when leadership appears to become a family affair.

“The message this sends to ordinary Nigerians is troubling: that leadership positions are predetermined within certain families, leaving others out in the cold,” he added.

The article has triggered mixed reactions, with some Nigerians expressing frustration over the perceived monopolization of power by political elites.

Others, however, argue that the focus should remain on the capabilities and achievements of potential leaders rather than their lineage.

Asabor concludes by calling for vigilance among voters and civil society to ensure that political ambitions are tempered by accountability and inclusivity.

“The future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on its ability to reject entitlement in all forms and embrace leaders chosen by the people, not by privilege,” he asserts.

The discussion around “Sheyi-Lokan” has reignited debates about Nigeria’s democratic trajectory, sparking calls for reforms that prioritize competence and fairness over family ties.
