FG Housing Initiatives Create 252,800 Jobs, Impacting Urban Development

The Federal Government has successfully created 252,800 jobs for skilled and unskilled workers through extensive investments in housing projects under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

This was revealed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, at the 13th National Council on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development meeting in Gombe on Thursday.

Dangiwa highlighted the critical role housing investments have played in fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and generating employment.

The key initiative, the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Programme, is making significant strides with ongoing construction at 14 sites nationwide. These projects aim to deliver a total of 10,112 housing units across various states, including Yobe, Gombe, Nasarawa, Benue, and others.

Among the most notable developments are the 250-unit Renewed Hope Estates, comprising 1, 2, and 3-bedroom semi-detached bungalows, as well as large-scale cities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, and Lagos, each housing thousands of units.

With over 252,800 jobs created through these efforts, the housing sector is providing an average of 25 jobs per home, including positions for plumbers, masons, and laborers, who earn approximately N150,000 monthly. The impact extends beyond the construction sites, stimulating economic activity in surrounding areas.

“The Renewed Hope Cities are a clear demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the country’s housing deficit, while also creating jobs and fostering socio-economic development,” Dangiwa stated.

The minister also pointed to the urgent need for continued investment in housing to meet the growing demands of Nigeria’s expanding urban population, which is projected to reach 70% of the national population by 2050.

With a current housing deficit of 16 to 18 million units and over half of urban residents living in slums, the government is prioritizing solutions that ensure affordable and sustainable housing for all Nigerians.

In support of these efforts, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State echoed the importance of housing and urban development for the nation's socio-economic growth.

He praised the federal government's initiatives, adding that Gombe’s own state-led projects have delivered over 1,000 housing units through partnerships with the North East Development Commission and Family Home Funds.

With these combined efforts, both at the federal and state levels, Nigeria is moving towards a future where urban growth is balanced with sustainable, climate-resilient housing solutions that meet the needs of all citizens.
