The Cross River State Working Committee (SWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its state chairman, Mr. Venatius Ikem, citing allegations of misappropriation of funds, high-handedness, and poor leadership. The suspension was detailed in a letter dated November 15, signed by all 14 SWC members.
Adding to the call for his removal, the 18 Local Government Chairmen of the PDP in the state publicly endorsed the decision at a press briefing held at the party’s secretariat in Calabar.
In a strongly worded resolution, the SWC accused Ikem of contravening multiple provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), including Article 58.
They listed his alleged offenses as failure to perform duties, financial mismanagement, neglecting lawful directives, and engaging in actions detrimental to the party’s unity.
“His actions have been detrimental to the party’s interest and wellbeing; and as a result, he has brought the party into disrepute, hatred, and contempt.”

The forum of chapter chairmen, led by Chief Godwin Abeng, also backed the suspension, blaming Ikem’s leadership for the party’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 general elections.
“We endorse his removal by the SWC and believe this marks a turning point for the PDP in Cross River,” Abeng said.
In the wake of Ikem’s suspension, Austin Edibe, the PDP Vice Chairman for the northern senatorial district, has been appointed as the acting chairman.
Party leaders have expressed optimism that this change will reinvigorate the party as it begins preparations for the 2027 elections.
The development marks a significant shift in the leadership of Cross River PDP, with members hopeful for a more united and efficient administration moving forward.
