In a firm message to Nigerians, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s resolve to tackle the economic challenges facing the nation, especially in light of the recent removal of fuel subsidies. Speaking on FRCN’s Hausa radio program “Hannu Da Yawa,” Idris highlighted that the subsidy program, while costly, had mainly benefited a small elite group, while the average Nigerian saw little of its impact.
Idris assured listeners that President Tinubu’s administration is focused on stabilizing the economy, calling on government ministers to limit expenses by reducing the use of official vehicles and restricting personnel on official assignments. “President Tinubu is pointing out the need to change from the old ways of doing things in Nigeria,” Idris explained, adding that these measures, though seemingly modest, aim to bring about substantial change.
The Minister also emphasized the government’s renewed focus on agriculture and food security, following the Ministry of Agriculture’s recent renaming to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. This shift, he noted, signals Tinubu’s commitment to tackling food insecurity and addressing the agricultural sector’s needs from multiple angles.
Turning to security, Idris highlighted Tinubu’s dedication to bolstering Nigeria’s defenses through continued resource allocation and support for security agencies. He also mentioned ongoing talks regarding the possible establishment of state police, which could provide localized solutions to regional security challenges.
In response to recent power outages affecting northern Nigeria, Idris assured the public that these interruptions were unintentional. He pointed to Tinubu’s commitment to stabilizing the national power grid and completing the AKK Gas Pipeline Project, a move expected to boost industrial activity across the northern region.
Closing his address, Idris encouraged Nigerians to use social media responsibly, underscoring the importance of positively portraying the nation to the world. He reminded citizens of their role in collectively shaping Nigeria’s global image.
