The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible, transparent, and fair governorship election in Ondo State on November 16.
During a readiness assessment visit to various INEC Local Government Area (LGA) offices on Tuesday, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu assured citizens that preparations are well underway to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Professor Yakubu highlighted that all non-sensitive materials are already stationed at local government offices, signaling INEC's advanced state of readiness. "In terms of preparation so far, I am really impressed by what the state and local government offices have achieved," he said.
The remaining sensitive materials are scheduled to arrive next Tuesday, with full inspection by candidates, party representatives, observers, and security agencies slated for Wednesday.
The INEC Chairman outlined a detailed schedule leading up to the election, emphasizing transparency and accessibility. On Thursday, INEC will begin distributing sensitive materials to the LGAs, where an additional inspection will take place before the materials are moved to the respective wards on Friday.
To further enhance the integrity of the voting process, Yakubu confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices have been configured, charged, and will be deployed alongside the sensitive materials.
The BVAS system, which ensures accurate voter identification, has been a key element in INEC’s ongoing reforms for a fairer electoral process.
Yakubu also addressed security concerns, particularly for officials and materials in riverine areas of Ondo State. INEC is taking proactive measures, including the provision of life jackets for all personnel assigned to these regions.
"For those going to riverine areas, we have devised a method to keep materials afloat in the event of any incident, allowing for safe retrieval," he explained. Life jackets will be available for officials and security personnel in all riverine areas nationwide, underscoring INEC's commitment to staff safety.
The INEC Chairman emphasized that every measure is being taken to safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process, affirming the Commission’s determination to deliver a credible election that reflects the true will of the people in Ondo State.
