In a significant step towards criminal justice reform, the Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted amnesty to 117 convicts serving various prison terms across the state.
The governor’s action was part of ongoing efforts to decongest prisons and provide second chances to individuals who have demonstrated genuine rehabilitation.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, known for his progressive stance on governance, emphasized the importance of reintegration for those who have paid their dues to society.
"This amnesty is a show of compassion, but it also underscores the need for reforms that encourage rehabilitation over retribution," he stated.
The release of the convicts is expected to ease the burden on the state’s overcrowded prison system while also giving the beneficiaries a chance to reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens.
This move has been met with praise from human rights groups and legal experts who view it as a bold approach to tackling the state's justice challenges.
Critics, however, urge caution, stressing the need for proper post-release programs to ensure that these individuals have the support necessary to prevent recidivism.
