In June 15, 1991 A day etched in the memory of Nigerian football fans. At the Dan Anyam Stadium in Owerri, a First Division Professional League match between Iwuanyanwu Nationale and visiting BCC Lions of Gboko turned tragic.
Moses Kpakor, captain of BCC Lions, suffered a severe injury that would change his life forever.
Hailing from Kwande Local Government area of Benue State, Moses Kpakor was born into a family of prolific football stars.
The fourth of 14 children, he shared his talent for the sport with his elder brother, the late Terfa Kpakor, known for his wizardry on the field. Moses too had talent in full measure.
During the tension-soaked match, an early goal by BCC’s Amaechi Ottiji was disallowed, and BCC Lions' youth international John Agum was red-carded within the first five minutes. The pressure was immense as Nationale players needed a win to lift their half-salary restriction.
In a devastating turn of events, Kpakor's right lower limb was broken, and he was carried off the field on a stretcher.
This injury, which occurred just three weeks before his planned move to Dutch giants Feyenoord, was rumored to have ended his career.
Despite the tragedy, Kpakor expresses gratitude. He acknowledges the defunct Benue Cement Company for his treatment in London and the unwavering support from the soccer-loving people of Gboko, Benue State, and well-wishers across the country. Their collective support inspired his earlier-than-expected return to football.
Reflecting on the incident 29 years later, Kpakor states, "Your collective support still lingers in my mind, and I want to once again say to all of you that I still appreciate your collective support. Thank you all, and God bless you."
