Nigeria’s Petroleum Ministry Embraces AI to Revolutionize Oil and Gas Sector

The Ministry of Petroleum Resources announced on Thursday its adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in exploration and production processes to boost efficiency and cut costs in the country's oil and gas sector.
During a staff meeting in Abuja, Permanent Secretary Nicholas Ella emphasized that this initiative aligns with the current administration's priorities. He highlighted that the primary goal is to adhere to the presidential directive issued in January to "unlock the energy sector and natural resources for sustainable development."

Ella stressed the importance of addressing Nigeria's vast energy needs for both residential and industrial use. He explained that integrating AI will optimize exploration and production, enhance predictive maintenance, and improve decision-making through data analytics. This technological shift aims to increase operational efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact, thereby positioning Nigeria’s oil and gas sector at the forefront of innovation. Committees have been formed to oversee these initiatives and ensure their successful implementation.

The federal government’s emphasis on gas infrastructure development is demonstrated by the "Decade of Gas" program, aiming to expand gas supply and distribution as the major energy source. Ella noted significant expansions like the AKK Gas Pipeline Project, the OB3 Gas Pipeline Project, and the ANOH project, undertaken by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). These projects aim to establish Nigeria as a leading gas-powered economy.

Additionally, the ministry plans to diversify the energy mix by investing in renewable energy projects and hydrogen development, while enhancing regulatory frameworks to attract private investments. The ministry is also developing a hydrogen policy to produce green hydrogen and contribute to global carbon emission reduction efforts.

Ella underscored the importance of digitizing documents for easy access and legal compliance through the Enterprise Content Management system. He called for zero tolerance for indiscipline among staff and urged adherence to service rules. A robust performance management system with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be implemented for departments and agencies.

In her welcome remarks, Director of Human Resources Management, Mrs. Asma’u Shehu Adaji, encouraged attendees to align with the ministry's aspirations to achieve its objectives.
