[BREAKING]Rivers State House of Assembly Set to Screen CTC Chairmen and Members for 23 LGAs Today

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Victor Oko Jumbo, will screen the Caretaker Committee (CTC) Chairmen and members for the state's 23 local government areas today.

This follows Governor Siminalayi Fubara's directive for heads of local government administration to take control of the council areas, after the three-year tenure of elected local government officials expired. In a Tuesday broadcast, Governor Fubara instructed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume leadership of the councils with renewed commitment, emphasizing the need to uphold the constitution and maintain law and order.

The expiration of the elected officials' tenure on June 17, 2024, led to tension in Port Harcourt as youths allegedly loyal to the governor took over council secretariats, preventing outgoing chairpersons from entering.

Videos on social media showed residents and political supporters of the governor occupying Port Harcourt City and Omuma council areas.

A memo signed by Clerk of the House G.M. Gills-West surfaced on Wednesday, inviting 23 individuals for screening as CTC chairmen. Additionally, seven individuals from each LGA are to be screened as caretaker committee members. The memo specified that nominees must bring twelve sets of their CVs along with the originals and photocopies of their credentials for the screening, scheduled for 8:00 a.m. today at the Rivers State House of Assembly.
