President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the National Assembly complex on Wednesday, following conflicting information from Presidential spokespersons Ajuri Ngelale and Bayo Onanuga regarding his potential address at the NASS’ joint meeting.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced that the President would only attend the rendition of the new national anthem, which he reportedly approved on Wednesday morning, but would not be addressing a joint session due to other engagements.
This confusion arose from conflicting statements by presidential spokespersons Bayo Onanuga and Ajuri Ngelale on Tuesday regarding President Bola Tinubu’s planned activities to mark his one year in office.
Earlier announcements by Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the National Assembly, indicated that Tinubu would deliver a “state of the nation” address at a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives and would also inaugurate the National Assembly library.
Onanuga confirmed Tambuwal’s statement, detailing Tinubu’s address at the parliament as part of the anniversary activities.
However, Ajuri Ngelale refuted these claims, stating that the Office of the President was not involved in planning the event and that President Tinubu was not scheduled to speak at the planned program.
In response, the Presidency emphasized President Tinubu's commitment to delivering good governance and inaugurating strategic projects across the country.
As a result of this, the planned speech by President Tinubu before a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, was declared as false and unauthorized, as the Office of the President was not involved in the planning of the event.
