IPOB Calls for State of Emergency in Nigeria's Judiciary

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has expressed concern about the state of the Nigerian judiciary under the leadership of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
In a statement released by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, on Tuesday, IPOB called for a state of emergency to be declared on Nigeria’s judicial system.

The group criticized the ongoing prosecution of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and stated that it is troubling that the clear provisions of the Nigerian constitution, under which Kanu's trial is being conducted, are not being properly interpreted.

IPOB alleged that certain segments of the judiciary are willing to compromise the basic foundations of criminal law procedure in Nigeria in the case of Kanu.

They have called for the retraining of high court judges on how to interpret judgments, decisions, and opinions of superior courts of record.

The statement emphasized the need for immediate intervention to address what they view as a perversion of the course of justice and a desecration of the rule of law.

IPOB highlighted a specific instance where a high court judge openly stated that she would not obey or have regard for any determination made by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which they view as an invitation to judicial anarchy and procedural lawlessness.

They urged the CJN to declare a state of emergency in the judicial sector and emphasized the urgent need for retraining of high court judges to prevent the undermining of the rule of law and the judicial process.

IPOB called on the CJN to intervene and salvage the judiciary, emphasizing the importance of upholding the principles of law, justice, and equity for the benefit of all.
