The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has for the first time spoken in detail about a recent private meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, revealing that the embattled governor came to beg for peace but was told he lacked the “capacity” to broker true reconciliation.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Wike disclosed that Governor Fubara was accompanied by two governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the visit, where he sought to end the political rift between the two former allies.
However, Wike said he dismissed the gesture, accusing Fubara of double standards and lacking the will to genuinely pursue peace while his supporters continued to fan the flames of crisis in Rivers State.
“I told him (Fubara) I don’t think you have the capacity to really make this peace. It’s not easy; if you’re making peace, your people are demonstrating every day,” Wike said.
He continued: “If you are making peace, your people are busy on television insulting people. You can’t preach reconciliation in one breath and allow your followers to promote division in another.”
The comments come amid heightened tensions in Rivers State, where the political crisis between the two men—once close allies—has escalated into a full-blown battle for control of the state's political structure.
In a related development, Governor Fubara, during a speech on Sunday, had urged his supporters to refrain from actions that could jeopardize the peace process, calling for restraint and discipline.
Observers say the strained relationship between Wike and Fubara—who was widely believed to be Wike’s political protégé—has thrown Rivers politics into uncertainty, with implications for the 2027 elections and the future of the PDP in the state.
