Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late predecessor, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing his tenure as short but profoundly impactful.
Jonathan made the remarks on Monday via his official X (formerly Twitter) page, marking 15 years since Yar’Adua’s death on May 5, 2010. He described the late leader as a patriot and servant-leader whose life was defined by service, justice, and accountability.
“Fifteen years ago, our nation lost a patriot. A servant leader, with whom I shared a common vision for a united, inclusive, and just nation,” Jonathan wrote.
Reflecting on their time together in office, Jonathan praised Yar’Adua for carrying the “burden of reconciling our people” and striving to foster peace and national unity during his presidency. He noted that Yar’Adua’s legacy continues to be a guiding light in leadership, particularly for his commitment to rule of law, inclusiveness, and public good.
“His tenure, although short, was impactful and progressive — a moment we remember for selfless service and deep commitment to the public good,” he said.
Jonathan recalled Yar’Adua’s journey from being a teacher to a governor and then to the presidency, emphasizing that every step of his leadership journey was marked by “hard work, patriotism, accountability, and a firm dedication to justice.”
Describing the late President as a "friend, brother, and boss," Jonathan praised Yar’Adua for his genuine nation-building efforts and pursuit of a democracy anchored on justice, equity, and unity.
President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died in office on May 5, 2010, after a prolonged illness, making Jonathan his constitutional successor. Yar’Adua’s presidency remains widely respected for its reforms, humility, and adherence to democratic values.
