Korinya City, Benue State – Tensions have erupted in Korinya following the tragic death of a young man, Aondofa Akpenwua—popularly known as Soon—who was allegedly beaten to death by members of a local vigilante group, the Anyam Nyor Protection Squad.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Akpenwua was accused of stealing a mobile phone from a resident.
He was reportedly apprehended by the vigilante group and subjected to a brutal beating, which ultimately led to his death.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the atmosphere as deeply emotional, with residents in shock and grief over the young man’s lifeless body.
“It was devastating to watch. He was already unconscious when they stopped,” said one resident who asked to remain anonymous.
The following day, anger turned to action. In response to the killing, irate youths in Korinya launched retaliatory attacks, setting ablaze several houses believed to belong to members of the Anyam Nyor Protection Squad. Smoke and flames filled parts of the community as tensions escalated into violent unrest.
Community leaders and local authorities have condemned both the killing and the retaliatory violence. Calls are growing for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Akpenwua’s death and for justice to be served through legal channels.
“We cannot allow unlawful killings or mob justice to define how we handle disputes or accusations,” said a local youth leader. “This community deserves peace, and justice must be pursued through the proper institutions.”
This developing story continues to unfold as Korinya grapples with the aftermath of a tragedy that has shaken the entire community.
