Governor Alia Visits Naka, Condemns Violent Protests Over Youth Killings

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, on Thursday, visited Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West Local Government, to assess the extensive destruction left in the wake of violent protests that erupted in the area.

The unrest, which took place on March 11, 2025, was triggered by the tragic killing of three youths in Tsambe-Mmbesev Ward, sparking outrage among residents.

The protests escalated into chaos as demonstrators set fire to and looted several properties, including the palace of the Ter Tyoshin/Nagi, His Royal Highness Daniel Abomtse, and the Gwer-West Local Government Secretariat.

Among other properties destroyed was the residence of Felix Atume, a former Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), further underscoring the scale of destruction.

During his visit, Governor Alia, who was en route to Otukpo, stopped at the local government secretariat, where he personally observed the widespread damage inflicted on the buildings.

Expressing deep concern over the violent turn of events, he strongly condemned the destruction, emphasizing that while protests are a democratic right, resorting to violence and vandalism undermines the pursuit of justice.

In his address to the people of Gwer-West, Governor Alia urged calm and assured the affected communities that his administration was committed to ensuring justice for the slain youths.

He reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to restore order and provide support for the rebuilding of destroyed properties.

As investigations continue, the Benue State government is expected to collaborate with security agencies to prevent further escalation of violence and bring those responsible for the killings and destruction to justice.
