The Vatican on Tuesday released the first official images and video of Pope Francis lying in state, as preparations for his funeral on Saturday intensify.
The late pontiff, who passed away recently after over a decade of influential leadership in the Catholic Church, is seen in an open coffin, adorned in red liturgical vestments. A mitre rests on his head, and a rosary is placed solemnly in his hands.
The images, credited to Vatican Media, capture poignant moments from the Domus Sanctae Marthae chapel, where Pope Francis’ body currently lies in state. Surrounded by members of the Swiss Guard, senior cardinals, and Vatican officials, the sacred atmosphere reflects the deep mourning within the global Catholic community.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell was among the first high-ranking clergy to bless the Pope’s body ahead of the ceremonial transfer to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the faithful will have the opportunity for public veneration beginning this week.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. and will be held in St. Peter’s Square.
The Mass will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. He will be joined in concelebration by Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from across the globe, underscoring the Pope’s far-reaching influence.
“The Eucharistic celebration will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and Valedictio rites,” the statement noted. These traditional farewell prayers mark the solemn end of the funeral Mass before the body is transported for entombment.
Following the service, Pope Francis’ remains will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica, and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where he will be laid to rest, continuing a tradition of papal burials in sacred sites across Rome.
The coffin is expected to be ceremoniously carried from the Casa Santa Marta chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica ahead of the funeral.
