ECOWAS Sends Technical Mission to Guinea to Accelerate Return to Constitutional Rule

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deployed a high-level technical mission to Guinea as part of its renewed commitment to guide the country’s transition back to constitutional governance.

This initiative, which was announced in a statement on Monday by the ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, underscores the regional bloc’s persistent efforts to restore political stability and democratic order in the West African nation.

Leading the delegation is Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. The mission visited the Guinean capital, Conakry, where it held crucial consultations with national authorities on April 10 and 11, 2025.

The focus of the discussions was the implementation of a 10-point agreement previously signed between ECOWAS and Guinean transitional authorities. This agreement serves as a strategic roadmap aimed at ensuring Guinea’s return to democratic rule following the 2021 military takeover that disrupted constitutional order.

“The Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, has reaffirmed the regional organisation’s commitment to supporting Guinea in its transition process,” the statement read.

It added that the technical mission engaged with various Guinean stakeholders to evaluate progress made so far in executing the agreed-upon measures, which include the organization of credible elections, judicial reforms, the drafting of a new constitution, and the demobilization and reintegration of security forces into civilian roles.

This latest move by ECOWAS signals its determination to play a more active role in overseeing transitions in the region and ensuring that countries emerging from political upheavals uphold democratic principles.

ECOWAS has repeatedly emphasized the need for a swift and transparent transition process in Guinea, warning against prolonged military rule and urging full adherence to the timeline laid out in the agreement. The bloc has maintained that constitutional governance remains non-negotiable for all member states.

The statement also reiterated ECOWAS’s readiness to continue offering technical, diplomatic, and logistical support to help Guinea meet its democratic milestones.

As the West African region grapples with multiple transitions and political instability in some member states, ECOWAS's intervention in Guinea is being closely watched as a test case for the bloc’s influence and commitment to upholding democracy across the region.
