In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has overturned the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had previously recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
Delivering a unanimous verdict on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to make such a pronouncement, having already determined that the core issue at hand revolved around the party’s internal leadership dispute.
The Supreme Court emphasized that matters of party leadership remain internal affairs, over which courts have no authority to intervene.
The decision came in response to an appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other party, with the Supreme Court ruling in their favor, declaring their appeal meritorious. Additionally, the court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction of the LP, branding it unmeritorious.
This ruling effectively removes Abure from his position as National Chairman of the Labour Party, further deepening the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party.
With this verdict, the Labour Party now faces fresh questions about its leadership and future direction as political tensions rise ahead of upcoming elections.
