The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Abiola Odutayo in connection with the tragic death of 32-year-old Adetunji Opayele, better known as Teejay, the co-founder of Bumpa, following a fatal collision on March 4, 2025.
The incident, which has sparked public outrage across the nation, occurred on Ozumba Mbadiwe, Lagos, and led to Opayele’s untimely death.
Odutayo, the driver involved, was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, after her discharge from the hospital. She is facing charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, resulting in the death of Opayele.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, reassured the public that the investigation was thorough, emphasizing the commitment to justice and transparency. He also confirmed that the court had granted Odutayo bail, with the case now adjourned until April 16, 2025.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and all affected by this loss. The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to ensuring fairness, transparency, and justice in this case,” Hundeyin said in the statement.
The incident has caused widespread anger across Nigeria, especially after it was reported that Odutayo allegedly failed to assist the critically injured Opayele, citing concerns about staining her vehicle. Witnesses also claimed that multiple hospitals refused to treat the victim, leaving bystanders scrambling to find medical help.
In response, over 35,000 Nigerians have signed a petition demanding justice, with many calling for more severe charges, such as manslaughter, to be brought against Odutayo.
Petitioners are also urging the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to oversee a thorough investigation and ensure proper prosecution of the case.
The case continues to develop, with the public closely watching for further legal action.
