In a decisive move to enforce the Benue State Anti-Open Grazing Law, the Benue State Community Policing Guards (BSCPG) have commenced a major operation to clear herders and stray livestock from the surroundings of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM).
The exercise, which is part of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s commitment to upholding the state’s anti-open grazing regulations, aims to tackle the rising concerns over unregulated grazing activities in urban and academic environments.
Authorities have confirmed that the operation targets unauthorized cattle movement around the university, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for students and staff.
The governor’s administration has reiterated its stance on zero tolerance for open grazing, warning that violators will face strict penalties under the existing legal framework.
Residents and students have expressed support for the move, describing it as a bold step toward restoring order and security in the university area.
Meanwhile, enforcement agencies have been directed to remain vigilant and extend the exercise to other affected parts of the state.
Governor Alia, while commending the BSCPG for their efforts, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to securing Benue’s farmlands and communities from the threats posed by illegal grazing.
He assured the public that the state government would continue implementing sustainable agricultural and security policies to protect lives and property.
More details to follow as the enforcement continues.
