President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed the bill establishing the North-Central Development Commission (NCDC) into law, marking a significant step toward boosting development in the region.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session in the Senate chamber.
Expressing optimism about the impact of the new commission, Akpabio emphasized that it would bring much-needed development to grassroots communities in the North-Central region.
"Let me also inform my colleagues that Mr. President has assented to the North-Central Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024, aimed at bringing development to the grassroots," Akpabio stated.
"We congratulate the good people of the North-Central region of Nigeria and wish them more progress and, most importantly, peace as we continue the task of nation-building."
The creation of the NCDC is expected to address developmental challenges in states within the North-Central geopolitical zone, which have faced years of infrastructure deficits, insecurity, and economic setbacks.
The commission will be tasked with facilitating projects that promote social and economic growth, similar to the roles played by the North-East and Niger Delta Development Commissions.
With this new law in place, stakeholders are optimistic that the region will experience significant transformation, particularly in areas of infrastructure, security, and economic empowerment.
The next steps will involve the full implementation of the commission’s mandate, including funding and operational structuring, to ensure it fulfills its developmental objectives.
