A violent confrontation erupted today in Abako, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State, as students of Government Day Secondary School, Abako, clashed with soldiers stationed in the area.
The face-off was triggered by allegations of harassment and assault involving a school head girl, a teacher, and members of the Nigerian Army deployed to maintain peace in the community.
According to reports, the tension began when a soldier, who was allegedly befriending a female student, bought her an unrecommended pair of earrings.
When she wore them to school, they were seized by the head girl as part of disciplinary measures. Upset by this, the student reportedly took the matter to the soldiers stationed at a nearby checkpoint.
During the school’s break period, the head girl went to the main market to buy breakfast but was allegedly harassed and assaulted by the soldiers at the checkpoint.
A teacher who intervened to question their actions was also reportedly beaten and brutalized by the uniformed men.
News of the incident quickly spread among students, sparking outrage. In retaliation, a large group of students stormed the checkpoint, leading to a violent confrontation.
Reports indicate that the soldiers fired shots into the air to intimidate the students, but they were overpowered and subjected to the same assault they had inflicted on the head girl and the teacher.
The shocking incident has sparked public outcry, with residents calling on authorities to launch an investigation and ensure that the soldiers involved are held accountable for their actions.
Community leaders and education stakeholders have condemned the soldiers’ alleged misconduct, describing it as a gross abuse of power and a betrayal of their peacekeeping duties.
As tension remains high in Abako, local authorities are expected to intervene to prevent further escalation and ensure that justice is served.
