The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed allegations that it sells substandard petrol with a high burn rate, calling the claims misleading and baseless.
In a statement on Saturday, the company’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, reacted to a viral video circulating online.
The video featured a content creator who compared the burn rates of petrol from two different stations Dangote petrol purchased from an MRS filling station in Alapere, Lagos, at N925 per litre and NNPC petrol bought at Ojodu Berger for N945 per litre.
The creator claimed that a generator powered by NNPC petrol stopped after 17 minutes, while the one using Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
NNPCL categorically denied these claims, stating that the fuel sold at its stations is of high quality and meets industry standards.
“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last,” the statement read.
“This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded, originating from unverified and amateur research that lacks credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.”
The company further clarified that a significant portion of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at its stations in Lagos is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, which follows stringent industry standards to ensure the quality of its petroleum products.
“It is important to emphasise that a significant percentage of Premium Motor Spirit sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos where this deceptive video was created is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security,” the company stated.
NNPCL accused the video’s creator of attempting to mislead the public and damage its reputation, describing the video as part of a broader scheme by economic saboteurs to spread misinformation.
“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians,” NNPCL declared.
“Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held fully accountable under the law.”
The company urged the public to disregard the video and rely on verified sources for accurate information. It reiterated its commitment to ensuring fuel availability, affordability, and quality while maintaining global industry standards.
