The Edo State House of Assembly has terminated the appointments of all political appointees attached to its members with immediate effect.
Speaker Blessing Agbebaku made the announcement during a plenary session held in Benin on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
Agbebaku stated that the decision was reached unanimously by all 24 members of the House. He assured that the dismissed appointees would receive their February salaries as part of their final entitlements.
The affected individuals include special advisers, senior special advisers, and other political aides appointed by House members following the inauguration of the Eighth Assembly in June 2023.
“I believe it has been nearly two years now, and the House has graciously agreed that these appointees, including special advisers and senior special advisers, should be relieved of their duties as of today, February 19,” Agbebaku stated.
He further added, “We will convene subsequently to determine the next course of action. However, they will receive their salaries for this month.”
The Edo State Assembly’s decision marks a significant shift in its internal administrative structure. Observers anticipate further discussions on potential replacements and restructuring within the House in the coming weeks.
The Edo State government has yet to comment on the implications of this decision, but stakeholders and political analysts are closely monitoring the situation for any further developments.
