Defiant El-Rufai Vows to Return to Nigeria Despite Alleged Threats of Exile

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that he remains undeterred despite facing multiple threats aimed at forcing him into "self-imposed exile."

The outspoken politician has vowed to return to Nigeria on February 20, dismissing widespread speculation about his possible arrest or detention.

El-Rufai made this assertion in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while responding to political analyst Imran U. Wakili.

He refuted claims that he was set to be arrested, detained, or tortured, calling them persistent rumors that have been circulating since July 2024, following the Kaduna House of Assembly’s controversial report against him.

He stated that his opponents panicked when he challenged the legality of what he described as a premeditated defamation and that they have gone to great lengths to compromise the judicial process, a situation he claims is still ongoing at the Court of Appeal.

Accusing certain individuals of using intimidation tactics through his friends, family, and associates in an attempt to pressure him into exile, El-Rufai firmly declared that he will not bow to these threats.

Insisting that he had been hearing the same threats since July 2024, El-Rufai alleged that some political figures wanted him silenced.

He cited previous instances where he had been arrested and detained for expressing his views but emphasized that such tactics would not deter him.

He stated that he had put all his previous academic and language-learning plans on hold and would now spend more time in Nigeria than ever before. In his words, silence is no longer golden, and inaction has never been an option.

The former governor drew parallels between his situation and that of other political figures who have faced government persecution.

He referenced the alleged torture of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to force his resignation, warning that the arrest, detention, and torture of political adversaries is nothing new in history.

El-Rufai confirmed that he intends to be back in Nigeria in time for the launch of former President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs, scheduled for February 20.

He sent a pointed message to those who oppose his return, saying they should take notice that he will be back in Nigeria for the event. Reaffirming his faith and resolve, he concluded by emphasizing his trust in God and his determination not to be intimidated.

He declared that they depend on no one but Allah, fear no mortal but Almighty Allah, always hope for the best but plan for the worst.

His bold statement sets the stage for a high-profile political showdown upon his return as he continues to challenge the accusations leveled against him.
