President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria used the platform of John Dramani Mahama’s inauguration as Ghana’s new president to rally African leaders toward unity, prosperity, and independence from Western influence.
Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, Tinubu, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), praised Ghana’s democratic strides while urging African nations to focus on self-determined growth and resilience.
Reflecting on the December 2024 election that returned Mahama to power, Tinubu described it as a testament to Africa’s democratic maturity.
“Ghana has answered the question of whether Africa can handle democracy and productivity resoundingly.
It is time that Africa’s critics stop doubting our capabilities. We have nothing to prove to anyone but ourselves,” Tinubu stated.
The inauguration marked Mahama’s return to power, succeeding Nana Akufo-Addo after his two-term presidency from 2017 to 2025.
Tinubu emphasized that the peaceful transition underscored Africa’s commitment to democratic governance and progress.
While subtly addressing Western powers, Tinubu asserted, “We shall lift our nations out of poverty and build resilient economies at our own pace.
Let no outsider demean us or pit us against one another. The spirit of Africa’s unity and progress is alive and rising.”
Tinubu praised Ghana’s legacy of leadership under figures like Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and pledged Nigeria’s unwavering support for Mahama’s administration.
“President John Mahama is a man of patriotic vision and substance. My dear brother, I am here to work with you, and Nigeria stands ready to collaborate for our shared prosperity,” he declared.
He urged African leaders to prioritize sub-regional integration, tackle pressing challenges like poverty and youth unemployment, and ensure sustainable development.
“Let this new era be marked by invigorated momentum to address instability, insurgency, and the challenges holding us back. Together, we will forge a future filled with hope and opportunity,” Tinubu concluded.
The inauguration ceremony, attended by regional and global dignitaries, symbolized a renewed commitment to democracy and unity across Africa, with Tinubu’s speech setting the tone for a collaborative and independent path forward for the continent.
