Prominent Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has expressed deep concerns over the growing disillusionment among Nigerians, stating that many citizens no longer feel proud to identify as Nigerians.
In a video circulating online on Thursday, Igboho, spotted at a UK airport, attributed this erosion of patriotism to systemic corruption, widespread insecurity, and a declining economy.
He further advocated for the separation of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, asserting that the country’s current structure is failing to serve its people effectively.
"Even inside the airport, there is no security. They can steal your belongings inside your bag in Nigerian airports," Igboho remarked. "Things like that make us sad to identify ourselves as Nigerians."
The activist emphasized that discontent with the state of affairs is driving calls for self-determination, particularly within the Yoruba community.
According to him, Yoruba youths who have gained valuable experiences and knowledge from their time abroad are eager to channel these insights into transforming the Yoruba nation into a modern, prosperous society akin to European nations.
"Our (Yoruba) youths will transform Yoruba nation. Most of them have travelled across the world, and they have learned a lot.
If they come back to Yoruba land, the knowledge will help them build it and transform the nation like those in Europe,” he stated.
Igboho’s call for separation comes amid ongoing debates about Nigeria’s unity, with ethnic and regional tensions fueling conversations about restructuring or outright independence for some regions.
He concluded by reiterating that if Nigeria cannot function as a unified and effective nation, it would be better for its various ethnic groups to seek their independence and develop autonomously.
