Senator Ned Nwoko Quits PDP Over Deep Divisions, Vows to Stay Committed to His People

In a stunning political move, Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after more than two decades of loyal service.

Citing deep-seated divisions and irreconcilable factions within the party, Nwoko declared that the current state of affairs in the PDP had made it impossible for him to effectively serve his constituents.

In his resignation letter, dated January 30 and addressed to the party’s leadership in Ward 8, Aniocha North Local Government Area, the senator expressed profound disappointment with the party’s growing internal conflicts.

“My decision to resign is first and foremost due to the deep divisions and factionalisation within the party. This fragmentation has made it increasingly difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of our people,” Nwoko stated.

He went on to cite a recent altercation among top PDP functionaries on January 29, where party members reportedly engaged in physical fights, further highlighting the party’s instability.

Despite his departure, the lawmaker expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing him with a platform during the 2022/2023 senatorial elections, which allowed him to directly engage with his constituents. However, he emphasized that the party’s internal disarray had hindered him from fulfilling his campaign promises.

“Regrettably, the current structure of the party in our state has not been conducive to realizing these promises.

After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that stepping away from the party is necessary to fulfill my obligations to my people,” he added.

Nwoko, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriations and serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Sports Development, assured his supporters that his commitment to their welfare remains steadfast.

“While I bid farewell to my membership in the PDP, I assure all party members and my constituents of my unwavering dedication to statesmanship.

My decision is rooted in the best interest of those I serve, and I remain committed to the progress and prosperity of our state and nation.”

The senator concluded by appreciating the PDP leadership and members for their support over the years, wishing the party success in its future endeavours.

As speculation mounts regarding his next political move, many are eager to see whether Nwoko will align with a new party or remain an independent force in Nigeria’s political landscape.
