The Obidient Movement has raised alarm over what it describes as a dangerous and reckless verbal attack on Peter Obi, the Labour Party's (LP) 2023 presidential candidate.
The concern stems from comments made by Felix Morka, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), during an interview on Arise TV on January 5, 2025.
Morka had controversially stated that Obi “has crossed the line so many times and he has what’s coming to him, and whatever he gets, he should manage it.
” This remark has been interpreted by the Obidient Movement as a direct threat to Obi's life and an ominous sign for peace and democracy in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the movement expressed strong disapproval, describing Morka’s statement as reckless and a tacit endorsement of violence.
“Such a declaration from the spokesperson of the ruling party is unbecoming and signals a dangerous descent into authoritarianism under President Tinubu’s administration,” the statement read.
The Obidient Movement demanded clarity from the APC, asking pointed questions about the alleged "line" Obi crossed, the authority under which it was drawn, and the specific actions or statements attributed to Obi that warranted such a comment.
The statement went further to accuse the Tinubu administration of prioritizing repression and intimidation over democratic engagement and dialogue.
It warned that any harm befalling Peter Obi, his family, or associates would be considered the direct responsibility of the Nigerian government and its agents.
Calling on both Nigerians and the international community, the movement urged vigilance and accountability in the face of what it sees as an escalating pattern of threats and intimidation.
It also called on security agencies to investigate Morka’s comments, ensuring such threats are not ignored.
Peter Obi himself has previously voiced concerns about threats to his life, citing his criticisms of the Tinubu administration as the likely cause.
His claims have drawn widespread attention, amplifying fears about the narrowing space for dissenting voices in the current political climate.
As tensions rise, the Obidient Movement has reiterated its commitment to peaceful advocacy and democracy, urging all stakeholders to uphold Nigeria’s democratic values while holding the ruling party accountable for its actions and rhetoric.
