A fresh political rift is brewing within Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as chieftain Ayekooto Akindele has accused former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of harboring resentment toward ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
Akindele’s statement came in response to Amaechi’s recent remarks at a democracy symposium in Abuja, where he praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the last Nigerian leader to sustain a thriving middle class.
According to Amaechi, administrations after Obasanjo have failed to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, a comment seen as a veiled criticism of Buhari’s economic policies.
Taking to his official Facebook page on Friday, Akindele, a staunch supporter of President Bola Tinubu, alleged that Amaechi’s discontent stems from Buhari’s refusal to back his 2022 presidential bid.
Despite Amaechi’s infrastructural projects in Buhari’s hometown, Daura including securing a chieftaincy title and establishing a Transportation University the former president did not impose him as the APC flagbearer.
“Two reasons Amaechi will never forgive Buhari,” Akindele wrote. “Despite procuring a chieftaincy title in Daura and allocating a Transportation University there, Buhari didn’t impose him on the APC.
Chai, this is unforgivable. Resigning to run a stadium marathon for APC ticket and lost shamelessly, despite begging Buhari to allow him return as minister, Buhari was just saying MININI as he didn’t understand what he was saying.”
Amaechi, who lost the APC primary to Tinubu, has yet to respond to Akindele’s claims. However, his recent statements have reignited debates over Buhari’s legacy and the deepening divisions within the APC.
Will Amaechi fire back, or will he remain silent amid these accusations? The coming days may unveil more political fireworks. Stay tuned.
