Wayne Rooney’s tenure as Plymouth Argyle’s head coach has come to an end following a disappointing nine-match winless streak that left the Pilgrims at the bottom of the Championship table, four points adrift of safety. The decision, announced on Monday, was described as a mutual agreement between Rooney and the club’s board.

Rooney, a Manchester United legend, took over as head coach in the summer but struggled to deliver consistent results. Under his leadership, Plymouth managed just four wins in 23 matches this season. Despite initial optimism and a promise to instill a positive footballing philosophy, the team’s poor form led to mounting pressure for change.
The club confirmed that assistant coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Stephen Ireland would also depart alongside Rooney.
In a heartfelt statement, Rooney expressed his gratitude to the club and reflected on his brief time with the Pilgrims:
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, who I shared great relationships with. Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who made the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach.
“Thanks for making the games at Home Park so special; they are memories that we will share forever. Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
Despite the disappointing results, fans acknowledged Rooney’s effort and dedication, with many appreciating his attempt to bring a dynamic style of play to Home Park.
Plymouth’s chairman, Simon Hallett, also praised Rooney’s commitment in a statement, noting the club’s shared ambition despite the challenges:
“Wayne Rooney joined us with a wealth of experience and ambition, and we were hopeful of a successful season. Unfortunately, the results did not match the effort and commitment shown by Wayne and his staff. We part ways on good terms and wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
Rooney’s departure marks another setback in his managerial career, which has included stints at Derby County and DC United. While his future plans remain uncertain, speculation is already mounting about his next move in football management.
