FG Launches N59.46 Billion Greater Dutse Water Supply Project to Transform Jigawa State

The Federal Government has unveiled the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project in Sintilmawa, Jigawa State, a N59.46 billion initiative aimed at addressing water scarcity and improving the quality of life for over 1.5 million residents in Dutse and surrounding areas.

The announcement was made in a statement on Friday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs. Funmi Imuetinyan.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, described the project as a transformative milestone in the government’s efforts to address a daily water supply deficit of 10 million litres.

He credited the Federal Executive Council under President Bola Tinubu for approving the initiative, which is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Key components of the project include the construction of 35 industrial boreholes equipped with solar-powered pumps, a 1,000m³/hr water treatment plant, and reinforced concrete and Braithwaite storage tanks at strategic locations.

Additionally, 56.6 kilometers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipelines will be laid for water transmission, along with solar systems, transformers, and generators to power the project. The development also includes administrative and staff facilities to ensure smooth operations.

Prof. Utsev highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the project, including job creation, economic growth, and significantly improved access to clean and safe drinking water.

He also announced the establishment of a dedicated Project Implementation Unit, comprising representatives from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, and the Jigawa State Government, to ensure timely execution and adherence to budgetary provisions.

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, lauded the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing perennial water shortages in the state.

He emphasized that the project would catalyze development and fulfill President Tinubu’s promise to prioritize infrastructure and essential services.

The Greater Dutse Water Supply Project is set to mark a major advancement in tackling water-related challenges in Jigawa, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving public welfare and fostering economic progress.
