Federal Government Vows Justice in Sokoto Airstrike Tragedy

The Federal Government has pledged a thorough investigation into the airstrike that claimed the lives of 10 people in Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa villages, Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

This assurance was given by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, during a condolence visit to Governor Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto on Friday.

In a statement on Saturday, the governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, quoted Matawalle as reaffirming the government's commitment to justice and the safety of all Nigerians.

“Justice will prevail, and this administration remains committed to safeguarding lives across the nation,” Matawalle said.

He expressed regret over the activities of terrorists and assured that the Federal Government would tackle them with renewed vigor.

Matawalle praised Governor Aliyu for his proactive measures against banditry, noting that Aliyu is the only governor who has formally requested a military base in his state.

The minister also assured the governor of continued federal support, including the provision of essential equipment to enhance security.

President Bola Tinubu, deeply concerned about the incident, conveyed his condolences through Matawalle.

The minister attributed the airstrike to erroneous intelligence during the military operation, while acknowledging reports that the area had been dominated by the Lakurawa bandits.

Governor Aliyu urged the military to enhance intelligence gathering and surveillance to prevent future targeting errors.

While mourning the victims, he described the tragedy as a learning point and called for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth.

The governor expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Matawalle for their concern and support, commending the efforts of the military and other security agencies in maintaining peace in the state. He prayed for peace and a resolution to the ongoing security challenges.

This tragic event has heightened calls for improved coordination and precision in military operations to protect civilian lives.

The Federal Government's investigation will aim to bring clarity and accountability to the circumstances surrounding the airstrike.
