In response to a recent boat mishap that claimed the lives of over 20 traders in Agatu Local Government Area, the Benue State government has announced plans to distribute life jackets at all crossing points in the state as a preventive measure against future tragedies.
The victims, traders from Nasarawa State, were returning home after a day’s business at the Ocholonya market when the tragic accident occurred.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Governor Hyacinth Alia extended condolences to the bereaved families and promised support for the injured.
“This incident has brought immense sorrow to our communities, and I share in your grief during this difficult time,” the Governor said, adding, “Your wellbeing is our priority, and we will work diligently to provide the care you need for a swift recovery.”
Governor Alia expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for their solidarity and compassion following the tragedy.
He assured the public that his administration would collaborate with the Nigerian Navy to enhance waterway safety and prevent such occurrences in the future.
Among the immediate measures announced is the provision of life jackets at all crossing points in the state. The Governor emphasized that this initiative is crucial to reducing casualties during potential mishaps.
“We will provide life jackets at all crossing points in the state as an immediate step,” he stated. “It is imperative that we prioritize the safety of our waterways to protect our citizens.”
The Governor also called on union leaders in the maritime sector and community officials to begin sensitization campaigns on the importance of using life jackets and adhering to safety measures while navigating the state’s rivers.
“We must foster a culture of safety and awareness to protect our people,” he urged, while praying for the repose of the souls lost in the mishap.
Governor Alia concluded by encouraging the state to honor the memory of the deceased through a renewed commitment to safety and vigilance on waterways, ensuring that such tragedies become a thing of the past.
